Rhodesian ridgebacks were originally called Lion dogs and were renowned for their guarding and hunting ability. The breed was first registered in 1924 and is inextricably tied to southern Africa, a rugged and unforgiving land.

Our kennel name, Shumbatsvuku, means “red lion” in Shona and is named after the first Rhodesian ridgeback dogs. The kennel was started in Zimbabwe in 1992 and has always based its breeding approach on the standards set by the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of Zimbabwe (The Parent Club). In 2008 Shumbatsvuku Kennels came to Canada and is now based on a farm in Renfrew County, Ontario. We continue to breed true-to-type dogs with pure African origin bloodlines.
